Drivers heading into Benidorm have another free parking option this summer after the town reopened its upgraded park-and-ride facility on Avenida de Beniardá following an eight-month redevelopment.
The refurbished car park welcomed its first vehicles on 1 July. It now offers more than 360 parking spaces, along with a range of improvements designed to boost convenience, accessibility and sustainability.
Modern facilities
The project has transformed what was once an unpaved parking area into a modern facility with surfaced parking bays, improved drainage and landscaped surroundings.
The €1.55 million redevelopment includes asphalt access roads, permeable parking surfaces, LED lighting, an electricity supply, trees and green spaces, new street furniture, vehicle counting and access control systems, improved signage and safety barriers.
In addition, the council has created dedicated spaces for people with reduced mobility and larger family vehicles. It has also installed the infrastructure needed for future electric vehicle charging points.
Funded through EU
The redevelopment forms part of Benidorm’s Vision 360 Sustainable Tourism Plan.
The project received full funding through the EU’s Next Generation recovery programme, so it did not cost the municipal budget anything.
Meanwhile, engineers included a sustainable drainage system to manage rainwater more effectively and reduce flood risk.
Nearly 1,000 free spaces
Mayor Toni Pérez visited the site before it reopened. He said the project has improved one of the city’s main gateways while providing a valuable service for residents, especially those living in the Foietes-Colonia Madrid neighbourhood.
He also expects commuters travelling into Benidorm for work to use the facility, helping reduce traffic in the town centre.
Finally, the mayor confirmed that the temporary car park next to the site will remain open. Together, the two parking areas provide close to 1,000 free spaces on one of the city’s main access routes.
