Spain is famous for many things, and its love of bars is right up there. According to figures from Accumin Intelligence, Spain has one bar for every 207 residents.
The Costa Blanca appears on the list as Benidorm continues to live up to its reputation as a place that never stops. According to the study, it has one bar for every 75 residents, a figure that puts it ahead of many large destinations in Spain. It reaches 13.2 bars per thousand residents, which is one of the highest densities in the entire country.
The highest density in Spain belongs to Calvià in the Balearic Islands, with one bar for every 63.6 people. Ibiza follows with one for every 68. Then comes San Bartolomé de Tirajana in the Canary Islands with one for every 69.
Major cities show lower density
Large provincial capitals naturally have many bars, but their big populations keep the density figures lower. Barcelona is the only large capital in the top twenty. It sits in twentieth place with 7.7 bars per thousand residents, or 129 per hundred thousand.
Other provincial capitals in the top twenty for total bars include Toledo, Cuenca, Granada, León, Ciudad Real, Segovia, Pamplona and Albacete. Malaga does not appear in this part of the ranking.
According to Gerardo Raido, marketing director at Accumin Intelligence, this type of data offers a clear view of how towns and cities function. He explains that areas with plenty of bars tend to show activity, tourism and social life, while places with none often struggle with depopulation.
Provinces such as Soria, Palencia, Ávila and Burgos, all in Castilla y León, have the highest number of municipalities without a single bar.
