The Castillo de la Atalaya in Villena (Atalaya Castle) will soon take on a starring role as one of the main filming locations for a new international production.
The film, People of the Book, draws on the historical novel by Geraldine Brooks. Local officials confirmed the plans after meeting members of the production team.
Filming across Alicante province
Good Films Studios Spain is producing the project. The company also backed El Cautivo, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, which crews filmed in parts of Santa Pola and Alicante.
Alongside Villena, crews will film at the Ciudad de la Luz studios and at other locations across Alicante, including the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. The production team also plans to use additional sites throughout the province.
Villena Castle : Famous filming location
The Castillo de la Atalaya dates back to the 12th century and ranks among the best-preserved castles in Spain.
Filmmakers have already used it in several productions.
Local officials highlighted the benefits of attracting film productions to the area.
They noted that filming generates economic activity and helps promote Villena as a tourist destination. Previous collaboration with the Costa Blanca Film Commission has focused on attracting more productions to the region.
Filming timeline and investment
The production team plans to shoot during spring and summer, working with a budget of around €18 million.
They began pre-production earlier this year in Alicante and expect it to continue for six months. The project will use studio space, workshops and support facilities, including the large outdoor water tank at Ciudad de la Luz.
Filming should continue until June.

It traces the book’s journey across different countries and time periods, blending historical research with drama and adventure.
