One of the most famous landmarks in Spain, and perhaps the most iconic building in Barcelona, is  Gaudí’s Sagrada Família.

But, it is still not finished!

Construction on this massive basilica began in 1882. A year later, the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project. He completely reimagined it, turning it into a bold and unique mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, full of symbolic details, twisting spires, and nature-inspired shapes.

Gaudí’s Sagrada Família: True dedication

Gaudí worked on the Sagrada Família for more than 40 years, dedicating the last part of his life entirely to it. When he died in 1926, only a small part of the building had been completed. Since then, generations of architects and builders have continued the work, carefully following Gaudí’s original vision.

Over the years, the construction has faced many delays, due to war, funding problems, and the complexity of the design. But now, after more than 140 years, the project is finally nearing completion. The current goal is to finish it by 2026, marking the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death.

Despite being unfinished, the Sagrada Família is one of the most visited buildings in the world, drawing about 2.8 million visitors each year. Tourists come from all over.

When it is finally completed, it will stand as the tallest church in the world.
