Are you looking for a stroll that is more about soaking up nature than counting your steps? The Yellow Trail at La Mata-Torrevieja might just be the route for you!

As walking routes, the Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja Natural Park stands out in Alicante’s landscape. It is situated in the Vega Baja del Segura area. The park stretches across parts of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos, and Rojales. The area is famous for its beautiful lagoons, salt flats, and rich wildlife.

Yellow Trail at La Mata-Torrevieja: Nature galore

One of the park’s favourite walking routes is the yellow trail, which offers a chance to explore its special ecosystem, plants, and birds. The walk starts at the Visitor Centre in La Mata, a former forester’s house about 400 metres from the N-332 road. From here, the path passes through various scenes, such as an irrigation channel, birdwatching hides, and a pine forest.

Early on, you will come across the irrigation ditch, a man-made channel that brings seawater into the park, creating a small marine environment. Here, you might spot marine life like crabs, seaweed, small fish, and other creatures.

Birdwatcher’s paradise

Along the way, there are several birdwatching hides where you can enjoy the lagoon and different birds like gulls, plovers, stilts, avocets, terns, flamingos, and grebes.

Further along, you’ll find the pine forest, a peaceful place to rest in the shade. Near the end is the El Zampullín hide, known for large gatherings of grebes.

The route is about 5 kilometres long and takes roughly one and a half to two hours to complete. The trail is easy to moderate in difficulty, with wide, clear paths suitable for all levels of walkers.
