Spain has long been a favourite with British retirees, more than 293,000 Brits now call it home.
And now, a new recommendation has singled out Alicante, on the Costa Blanca, as one of the very best places to settle down.
So, why Alicante?
Experts point to its sunshine, affordable lifestyle, and strong UK connections. It is a city that balances authentic Spanish culture with familiar British comforts, making it easy to slip into local life without feeling too far from home.
Add in a welcoming expat community, excellent transport links, and one of Europe’s top healthcare systems, and you have got a recipe for a stress-free retirement.
According to Ed Gallois, managing director at Funeral Guide, many retirees choose Spain not just for the climate but for the practical perks. “The lower cost of housing and day-to-day expenses allows pensions to stretch further, while the excellent healthcare system gives peace of mind,” he explained.
Alicante is well connected, with regular direct flights to the UK which is a big plus for keeping up with children and grandchildren back home.
ONS data shows that 41% of British residents in Spain are over 65, compared with just 18% in the UK, underlining the country’s popularity as a retirement destination.
Gallois also highlighted some practical matters worth planning for. One is Spain’s very different approach to funerals: “Spanish funerals typically occur within 48 hours of death, which can catch British families unprepared. Planning ahead and understanding these cultural differences is crucial.”
He also advised checking up on visa rules, which changed after Brexit. While the paperwork can seem daunting, thousands of Brits make the move successfully every year, showing that the appeal of retiring in Spain remains strong.
