I used to call them slush puppies, but here in Spain, they are known as granizados.

It is basically crushed or shaved ice mixed with flavoured syrup, a refreshing drink or snack, depending on how you have it.

My favourite is granizado de sandía, or watermelon slush. Sometimes I even turn it into a cocktail for a bit of fun. It’s simple to make, completely natural, and has no added colourings or preservatives.

What you need (makes 2 glasses)

  • 2 thick slices of watermelon
  • ½ glass of very cold water
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar or sweetener (optional)
  • Shot of vodka or tequila (optional)

Start by cutting the watermelon away from the skin and taking out any seeds.

Chop the fruit into small cubes and put them in a container that’s safe for the freezer.

Cover and freeze until solid.

When you’re ready to make the slush, take it out of the freezer and let it sit for a few minutes so it softens slightly. If you’re short on time, run the container under hot water to loosen it.

Pop the frozen chunks into a blender and crush them like you would ice.

If it’s too thick, add a little cold water to loosen it. You can add sugar or sweetener now, too, if you like, I usually skip it.

Blend until smooth, pour into glasses, and enjoy.

For a fun twist, replace the water with a splash of tequila, vodka, or bubbly.
