If you are heading inland along the Costa Blanca, make sure you save a stop for Novelda, and enjoy the Gaudí-inspired church. The moment you arrive, this landmark will draw your attention: the Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene.

La Santuario de Santa María Magdalena sits proudly on La Mola Hill, next to an ancient Almohad castle of the same name. It is one of those buildings that makes you stop and stare and is even part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.

Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene: Gaudí influence

The church designed by José Sala Sala, an engineer from Novelda was inspired by the Catalan Modernist style made famous by Gaudí. Construction began in 1918 and took nearly 30 years to complete, finishing in 1946. It replaced a small medieval hermitage that once stood on the same spot.

The sanctuary’s two tall towers, each about 25 metres high are topped with stone crosses and can be seen from quite a distance. The design mixes medieval, baroque, and natural elements, using local materials. You will see pebbles from the Vinalopó River, reddish bricks, coloured tiles, and stonework.

Inside, the church is just as interesting. It has a jar-shaped floor plan, symbolising the vessel Mary Magdalene used to carry balm to anoint Jesus. This shape is completely unique. At the back, there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, with a painting believed to be by Gastón Castelló.

Gaudi inspired church in Novelda: Must see feature

One of the most surprising features is the stone organ. It’s the first public organ in the world made entirely of natural stone from local quarries. Designed by Iván Larrea Bellod, it stands 11 metres tall. The organ weighs about 40 tonnes, and has nearly 7,000 parts, including 704 pipes.

You will find the sanctuary on Cerro de la Mola, about three kilometres from the town centre. It is open daily from 10:00 to 14:00 and again from 17:00 to 20:00. As opening hours can vary on holidays, it is best to double-check with the Tourist Office of Novelda. The office can be reached by phone on +34 965 609 228 or by email at novelda@touristinfo.net.
