The worst of this week’s intense heat may be easing across Costa Blanca, but don’t expect much relief after sunset.

Although daytime temperatures will dip slightly over the weekend, the warm Mediterranean Sea will keep overnight temperatures unusually high. As a result, many parts of the Costa Blanca are likely to experience more tropical nights.

The combination of cooler afternoons and warm nights will also create humid, sticky sleeping conditions, especially along the coast.

Hot days, sticky nights

After several days of extreme heat, temperatures should fall by a couple of degrees between Friday (26 June) and Sunday (28 June).

Most coastal resorts will see afternoon highs in the low 30s. However, inland parts of the province will remain noticeably hotter.

Night-time temperatures, meanwhile, will stay stubbornly high. In many coastal areas, the mercury will remain above 20C until morning, meeting the definition of a tropical night. In the warmest spots, temperatures could even stay above 25C, creating what meteorologists describe as a “torrid night”.

Why the nights stay so warm

The Mediterranean Sea is one of the main reasons.

After weeks of sunshine, the water has stored a huge amount of heat. It then releases that warmth overnight. Light winds and high humidity make matters worse by preventing temperatures from falling very far.

Good news for beachgoers

Despite the warm nights, the weekend weather looks excellent.

Forecasters expect plenty of sunshine, clear skies and no rain across the Costa Blanca. In addition, sea breezes should make afternoons feel more comfortable than they did earlier this week.

The conditions are ideal for the beach, outdoor dining and sightseeing. Even so, UV levels remain very high.

Summer heat isn’t going anywhere

The slight drop in temperatures is unlikely to last.

Forecasters expect another rise early next week. As a result, the Costa Blanca looks set to remain firmly in midsummer mode as Spain heads towards another hotter-than-average summer.
