Calling all wine lovers. A bottle from right here on the Costa Blanca has just picked up a bit of international applause.

The Murviedro Cepas Viejas Monastrell 2021, from the DOP Alicante, has taken home a gold medal at the Berliner Wein Trophy 2026.

Not bad for something you could quite easily be sipping on your terrace.

Costa Blanca wine : Big win on a global stage

The Berliner Wein Trophy is not a small affair. This year’s winter edition saw more than 14,000 wines from over 40 countries competing.

So picking up a gold here is not just a polite nod. It is a proper stamp of quality.

Not just one winner

The team at Bodegas Murviedro had a very good trip to Berlin, collecting four gold medals in total.

Alongside the Monastrell, they also won for:

  • Cepas Viejas Bobal 2022 (Utiel-Requena)
  • Colección Crianza 2022 (Valencia)
  • Colección Reserva 2021 (Valencia)

Why this one matters locally

The Monastrell grape is something of a local hero in Alicante. It thrives in the dry, sunny conditions and tends to produce bold, full-bodied reds.

This award puts a spotlight on wines from the area and helps remind people that Alicante is not just about beaches and golf courses. There is some serious wine being made here too.

A quick word on the bodega

Bodegas Murviedro has been around since 1927, based in Requena, and is part of the wider Schenk group.

They have been quietly building a reputation for producing solid, reliable wines that reflect the region.

The important question

Is it worth trying?

In short, yes. If you like a red with a bit of character, this is one to keep an eye out for next time you are browsing the shelves.

¡Buen Provecho!
