If you fancy getting to know Orihuela a bit better, this September the town has the perfect walking tours for you.
The programme is packed with routes that explore its history, culture and legends, with the Virgin of Monserrate, the city’s patron saint, taking centre stage.
“September is always special here because we honour our patron saint, and we wanted our tourist routes to reflect that devotion,” confirmed Gonzalo Montoya, Councillor for Tourism.
The series dedicated to the Virgin begins on 6 September with The Treasures of Our Lady of Monserrate. It continues on the 13th with a Cultural Walk and the Sanctuary of Monserrate, and wraps up on the 14th with The Almohad Walls and the Hermitage of Monserrate.
It’s not all saints, though.
Local poet Miguel Hernández also features, with Gabriel Miró and Miguel Hernández on 11 September, and a tour of The Murals of San Isidro on the 28th. The latter takes visitors through a neighbourhood filled with colourful folk art.
New routes in Orihuela
This year’s programme also introduces fresh routes.
On the 19th there’s a visit to the Horno de Bustamante and the Lonja, paired with The Legacy of Alfonso X the Wise.
On the 27th, there’s a walk through the Soto del Río Segura in Molins, perfect for those who prefer trees and riverbanks over chapels and relics.
Rounding things off is a trip to La Aparecida, where visitors can hear about the hamlet’s origins and legends, before joining its much-loved tapas route. After all, history is always easier to digest with a plate of croquettes.
“As schools return and routines settle back in, these routes are a chance to learn more about Orihuela’s heritage and culture while enjoying a good day out,” the councillor added.
