Rio Safari in Elche had a birthday to celebrate on 25 August.
Peggy the pygmy hippo turned 25, and her keepers at Rio Safari marked the occasion with fruit popsicles.
Peggy belongs to the pygmy hippopotamus species, the lesser-known cousin of the hefty, more famous common hippo.
Unlike their bigger relatives, pygmy hippos are not quite as at home in the water. Instead, they prefer to take it easy on land, often lying low among thick plants or sinking happily into mud pools. These muddy retreats aren’t just for fun, they help keep the hippos cool and their skin hydrated.
Happy birthday, Peggy.
