Alicante is preparing to celebrate one of Spain’s most loved dishes with a major series of culinary competitions dedicated to the tortilla de patatas.
The city will host a regional qualifying event ahead of the prestigious Spanish Potato Omelette Championship, which returns as part of the Alicante Gastronómica fair from 2 to 5 October.
The regional contest, scheduled for 14 September, will determine which chef earns a place in the national final. Competitors will be judged on several key criteria, including the quality of the ingredients, cooking technique, texture, flavour balance and overall presentation.
A showcase for Valencian talent
The qualifying competition will bring together professional chefs and hospitality businesses from across the Valencian Community’s three provinces. The winner will secure a coveted spot in the national championship, joining some of Spain’s most highly regarded tortilla specialists.
Now in its eighth edition, the national contest will feature contestants from regions including Galicia, Cantabria, La Rioja, Madrid, the Basque Country, Castilla y León, Extremadura and the Valencian Community.
Renowned tortilla masters to compete
Among the chefs expected to take part are several well-known names from Spain’s competitive tortilla scene. These include:
- Alberto García Ponte from Mesón O Pote in Betanzos
- Pedro José Román of Restaurante Cañadío in Santander
- Carlos Olabuenaga from Tizona in Logroño
- Alejandro Oliveira of La Falda de Chamberí in Madrid
- Celia Clara Correia from La Teulada Cafetería in Elche
The championship roster also includes representatives from acclaimed establishments across the country. The chefs will showcase a wide range of regional styles and interpretations of the classic Spanish dish.
Innovation alongside tradition
In addition to the traditional competition, Alicante Gastronómica will also host the fourth edition of the International “Tortilla de Patatas Con…” Championship.
This creative contest challenges participants to reinvent the classic recipe by incorporating an additional ingredient, encouraging innovation while respecting the essence of the dish.
