With “La Renta” tax season approaching on the Costa Blanca, many residents will soon be preparing their annual Spanish tax return. This year, there is a new deduction that could help some taxpayers save a little money.
The regional government has approved a change to the income tax rules that introduces a new deduction linked to music education and participation.
The aim is simple: to encourage people to learn, practise and enjoy music by helping reduce the cost of training and related activities.
Up to €150 deduction for music training
Under the new rules, taxpayers may be able to claim deductions of up to €150 for expenses linked to musical education.
This includes fees paid for music lessons at conservatories, music schools or music and dance schools. Both public and private centres qualify, as long as they are officially registered.
The deduction also covers membership fees paid to musical societies that belong to the Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunitat Valenciana.
Tax deduction: Other music-related expenses
The new deduction goes beyond just tuition fees.
Eligible expenses may also include:
- Courses, masterclasses and seminars related to music training
- The purchase of musical instruments
- Sheet music used for learning or performing
- Tickets for concerts organised by recognised music schools or musical societies
The goal is to support music education while reducing the financial burden for families and students.
Who can benefit?
The deduction is available to taxpayers whose income falls within certain limits.
The thresholds are:
- Up to €60,000 in taxable income for individuals
- Up to €78,000 for joint tax declarations
These limits are the same as those recently introduced for health and sports-related deductions.
When it will apply
Although the rule has just been approved, it will apply retroactively from 1 January 2025.
That means it will be available during the next La Renta campaign, which begins on 8 April.
A region known for its musical culture
Music plays a huge role in local culture across the Costa Blanca. The area is home to hundreds of musical societies and bands, with thousands of musicians and students involved in everything from traditional wind bands to music schools.
