Calpe is set to bring a touch of London’s West End to the Costa Blanca this season. Enjoy a unique cultural initiative: live broadcasts of opera and ballet from the Royal Opera House.
An agreement with The Royal Ballet and Opera allows residents and visitors to enjoy world-class performances without leaving town.
The programme will screen five productions free of charge. It gives audiences direct access to some of the finest international performing arts events of the season.
The initiative makes the Calpe Cultural Centre a pioneering venue in the province, offering live, high-definition broadcasts of top-level productions. The goal is to let local audiences experience the magic of Covent Garden as if they were sitting in the London auditorium, right here in Calpe.
Ballet and opera highlights
The programme presents two ballets and three operas from the London season. Dance lovers can enjoy Woolf Works, a contemporary ballet inspired by the writing of Virginia Woolf, alongside the romantic classic Giselle, one of the cornerstones of the international ballet repertoire.
Opera fans can also watch three landmark works: Verdi’s La Traviata; Siegfried, from Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung cycle; and Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
The Council hopes the initiative will appeal to regular opera and classical music audiences while attracting new viewers through high production values and the excitement of seeing Royal Opera House performances live on screen.
Bringing the West End to Calpe
The season opens with “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi on Wednesday, January 14, at 7:45 pm.
Further dates and times will be announced through the Casa de Cultura and on the Calpe Town Hall website.
