Alicante is encouraging people to leave the car at home for a few days, with more than 15 free activities planned for European Mobility Week.
The city’s Semana Europea de la Movilidad (European Mobility Week) runs from Wednesday 16 to Tuesday 22 September. The programme includes bike rides, guided walks, bicycle checks, a photography competition and the return of the popular traffic-free coastal cycle route.
Electric scooters will also get plenty of attention this year, ahead of new rules coming into force on 1 October.
A traffic-free ride along Alicante’s coast
One of the biggest events comes on Sunday 20 September, when the Ciclovía
Litoral (Coastal Cycle Route) returns.
The city will close the route between Puerta del Mar and part of Avenida de Villajoyosa at La Cantera to normal traffic. Cyclists and users of personal mobility vehicles will then have the stretch to themselves.
Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, beside Paseo de Gómiz, will host an information stand for e-scooter users, a skills circuit and a children’s road safety park.
Participants must register at the stand. They will receive a gift and can enter a draw for three bicycles.
There is another family cycling event on Saturday 19 September. A la Almadraba en bici (To Almadraba by Bike) covers around six kilometres and runs from 11:00 to 13:30.
The ride starts at 11:00 from Paseo de la Policía Nacional, near Avenida de Elche. Families can take part using bicycles or personal mobility vehicles.
Free guided walks around Alicante
Three guided walks offer another way to explore the city.
On Wednesday 16 September, the route starts from the Trenet de la Marina station and visits Albufereta and Almadraba. Thursday’s walk starts at Plaza del Ayuntamiento and explores the historic centre and Santa Cruz.
The final walk on Friday 18 September starts at Plaza del Paseíto Ramiro and visits some of Alicante’s distinctive parks.
Each walk runs from 18:00 to 20:00, with groups limited to 25 people. Registration is free through the Mobility Week website.
E-scooter users can check the new rules
With Alicante already stepping up its e-scooter checks, Mobility Week gives riders a chance to find out what changes on 1 October.
Information stands will operate at different locations on 16, 17, 18, 21 and 22 September.
The new rules include a minimum riding age of 15 and compulsory approved helmets. Riders must use reflective clothing or reflective elements at night or when visibility is poor.
Scooters also need front and rear lights. The requirement to keep lights switched on throughout the day will not apply until October 2027.
The programme also includes free bicycle checks and adjustments, Biciregistro registration and a mobile photography competition. Winners of the photography contest will receive Móbilis cards loaded with 30 journeys.
All European Mobility Week activities are free.
