The Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales will fill with artists, crafts, workshops and live music this Sunday 4 October for the latest edition of Rodearte.
The monthly cultural event runs from 10:00. Rodearte offers free entry and a chance to explore the cave workshops where local artists and craftspeople work.
Visitors can also try their hand at several creative activities, watch demonstrations and discover a Brazilian dance known as the “dance of the embrace”.
Explore the cave workshops
Rodearte takes place on the first Sunday of each month at the Cuevas del
Rodeo, bringing together artists, craftspeople and visitors in one of Rojales’ most distinctive cultural spaces.
The cave workshops and craft stalls open at 10:00.
Throughout the morning, artists and artisans will demonstrate different skills and give visitors a closer look at their work.
At 11:30, three participatory workshops begin. Cave 2 hosts a recycling workshop, Cave 12 offers jewellery making and Cave 13 gives visitors a chance to discover pottery on the wheel.
All activities are free.
Try the ‘dance of the embrace’
Sunday’s programme also introduces visitors to forró, a popular dance and musical tradition from north-eastern Brazil.
Sometimes described as the “dance of the embrace”, partners dance closely together, and organisers have included it as an opportunity to bring different cultures together at the caves.
Music takes over at 12:00 when Prometeo performs Music for the Planet.
More art coming to Rojales
Rodearte is only the beginning of a busy October for art in Rojales.
The municipality will hold its first Festival de Arte Urbano (Urban Art Festival) from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October, bringing creative work into public spaces around the town.
Artist Gonzalo de Amarante Costa will also run free watercolour classes at La Cueva in Calle Piteras on Tuesdays 6, 13 and 20 October.
Classes run from 18:00 to 20:00. Places are limited and participants need to register in advance with Rojales Town Hall.
Three exhibitions to visit
There is plenty to see throughout October too.
Gonzalo de Amarante Costa’s Las cápsulas del tiempo (The Time Capsules) opens at 19:30 on Saturday 3 October in the Sala Mengolero at the Cuevas del Rodeo. The exhibition continues until 27 October.
The Archaeological and Palaeontological Museum of Rojales is hosting Pedro Juan Rabal’s Ecos del 27: Regeneración pictórica y poética (Echoes of ’27: Pictorial and Poetic Regeneration) until 30 October.
Laura Hernández also has an exhibition at the Ciudad Quesada Cultural Centre until 30 October.
But for anyone looking for something to do this Sunday morning, Rodearte offers an easy combination: wander through the caves, meet the artists, have a go at a workshop and stay for the music.
