Are you travelling tomorrow? There is a pretty good incentive to leave the car at home. The entire TRAM d’Alacant network will be free to use on Tuesday 22 September as the Valencian Community marks Día sin Coche (Car-Free Day).
The one-day offer means passengers can travel on the Alicante TRAM without paying a fare, whether heading into the city or using the network to get around other parts of the Costa Blanca.
The free travel initiative also applies to the Generalitat’s Metrovalencia, TRAM de Castellón and Metrobús services elsewhere in the Valencian Community.
How does free travel work on the Alicante TRAM?
You do not need to buy a special ticket to take advantage of the offer.
TRAM d’Alacant will switch off its validators, both on board and at stations, for the whole of Tuesday.
Ticket machines will remain switched on and will display a message explaining that travel is free.
Passengers will still be able to buy other valid travel passes from the machines, although single, return and metropolitan tickets will not be available.
So, if you are simply making a journey on Tuesday, there is no fare to pay.
Why is the Alicante TRAM free?
Tuesday 22 September marks Día sin Coche (Car-Free Day) and brings this year’s European Mobility Week to a close.
The Valencian Government is using the occasion to encourage more people to try collective and sustainable forms of transport.
It has launched the campaign Elige transporte público. Muévete. Comparte. Conecta (Choose public transport. Move. Share. Connect) alongside the wider European campaign Movilidad para todas las personas (Mobility for Everyone).
And unlike some transport promotions, there is no need to plan your journey around a short free-travel window. The offer applies throughout Tuesday.
What about buses and trains?
The free travel offer does not cover every form of public transport on the Costa Blanca.
It applies to the Generalitat-operated services included in the initiative. For Costa Blanca residents and visitors, that means TRAM d’Alacant.
Elsewhere in the Valencian Community, Metrovalencia, TRAM de Castellón and Metrobús will also take part.
Other bus operators and rail services are not included in the free travel announcement.
Discounts continue after Car-Free Day
Tuesday’s free travel is a one-day offer, but the Generalitat also has several longer-term public transport discounts in place.
Children under 14 can continue to travel free on regional public transport.
Other passengers currently receive a general 40% reduction on season tickets and multi-journey tickets. People under 31 can receive discounts of up to 50% on monthly tickets through the Móbilis 30 card.
But on Tuesday, you do not need a discount to use the Alicante TRAM.
If you have been meaning to try leaving the car at home for a journey along the Costa Blanca, tomorrow comes with one particularly persuasive argument: the TRAM fare is €0.
