Eight sections of road on the Costa Blanca have been officially marked as dangerous due to their high number of accidents, according to new data from the Dirección General de Tráfico.
These areas appear on the latest list of Tramos de Concentración de Accidentes (TCA). The classification highlights stretches of road where crash risk is significantly higher than on comparable routes.
Although 98 road sections in the province show high accident rates, only eight have been officially signposted as dangerous.
Busy road between Alicante and Sant Vicent highlighted
One of the most notable areas lies between Alicante and Sant Vicent del Raspeig.
Within a stretch of just 600 metres, three of the most problematic points on the province’s interurban road network appear close together. These areas also experience heavy daily traffic.
Two of the sections are located on the A-77a, at the main access to Sant Vicent.
- One section runs from kilometre 0 to 0.6, including part of the roundabout near the Universidad de Alicante.
- The second runs from kilometre 0.6 to 1.3, covering the roundabout near the Provincial Firefighters Consortium and the connection towards Agost.
Speed camera installed to improve safety
In 2025, authorities installed a speed camera on the A-77a heading towards Sant Vicent in an effort to reduce speeds and improve safety.
However, its effect has not yet been evaluated because the most recent accident statistics currently available relate to 2024.
According to Automovilistas Europeos Asociados, this stretch recorded the highest number of accidents and injuries in Spain between 2019 and 2023, with 104 crashes and 150 victims.
Another nearby accident hotspot
Another problematic area lies on the A-77, which links the A-70 with the A-7 towards Alcoy.
This junction is located less than 1.2 kilometres from the accident-prone sections on the A-77a.
N-332 near Santa Pola records most accidents
The most dangerous section in the province is located on the N-332 near the entrance to Santa Pola.
The stretch between kilometres 87.9 and 88.4 recorded 11 accidents in 2024, leaving 17 people with minor injuries.
The second most problematic area is the previously mentioned section of the A-77a between kilometres 0 and 0.6, where nine accidents caused 13 minor injuries.
Additional high-risk areas across the province
The updated list also includes a new accident concentration section on the N-332 between Altea and Calp, in the Mascarat area, between kilometres 163.9 and 164.4.
Other accident-prone areas appear on the N-340 near Torrellano within the municipality of Elche. The designated section there has been slightly modified.
Another remains on the same road in Albatera.
In Torrevieja, the previous list included two dangerous sections of the N-332. The latest update now identifies only one, between kilometres 52.6 and 53.1. This section recorded 10 accidents and 12 injuries, including one serious case.
Accident statistics across the province
Across the eight officially marked sections, authorities recorded 40 accidents with victims in 2024, leaving 60 people injured.
When all high-risk sections are considered, the total rises to 98 stretches of road across the province.
In these areas, authorities recorded 372 accidents involving victims, including:
- 11 fatalities
- 589 injuries
- 29 serious injuries
What counts as an accident concentration section
The DGT defines a Tramo de Concentración de Accidentes as a road section no longer than three kilometres where accident rates are significantly higher than on similar routes.
This classification is based on several years of data, rather than a single year.
It differs from the commonly used term “black spot”, which refers to a much smaller stretch of road of about 100 metres where three or more accidents with victims occur within one year.
Warning signs installed for drivers
To improve safety, the DGT has installed new warning signs along these sections.
The signs alert drivers that they are entering an area with a higher risk of accidents, encouraging them to slow down and drive with extra caution.
