Torrevieja will once again allow traditional San Juan bonfires on four of its beaches this year, and local authorities are preparing a major security and emergency response operation ahead of one of the busiest nights of the summer.

The celebrations will take place on the night of 23 June, when thousands of residents and visitors are expected to gather along the coastline. As is tradition, many people will mark the arrival of midsummer with beach bonfires, music and the customary midnight swim.

Four beaches will host bonfires

Unlike some neighbouring municipalities that have introduced stricter restrictions on beach fires, Torrevieja has designated four beaches where people can light bonfires under controlled conditions.

As a result, residents and visitors can continue enjoying one of the area’s most popular San Juan traditions while the council protects public safety and the coastline.

To prepare for the event, local officials have spent weeks coordinating a large-scale operation involving police officers, Civil Protection volunteers, firefighters, lifeguards and cleaning teams.

Authorities strengthen security measures

Given the large crowds expected, the council and emergency services will increase security across the authorised beach areas.

Throughout the evening, emergency teams will monitor access points, supervise bonfire zones and respond to incidents as they arise.

In addition, officers will enforce regulations covering fire safety, alcohol consumption, littering and the use of fireworks.

The operation forms part of a wider effort seen across the Costa Blanca. While councils want to preserve long-standing San Juan traditions, they must also address growing concerns about public safety, environmental protection and fire prevention.

Cleaning crews will start work before sunrise

Once the celebrations end, municipal cleaning crews will move in almost immediately.

In fact, workers plan to begin restoring the beaches before sunrise so they can welcome residents and holidaymakers later in the morning.

As in previous years, cleaning teams will use additional staff and specialist equipment to remove ashes, rubbish and other debris left behind after the festivities.

A very popular Costa Blanca tradition

San Juan remains one of the most eagerly anticipated nights of the year across the Costa Blanca.

For many people, the celebration combines ancient midsummer customs with modern-day festivities. Traditionally, participants gather around bonfires to symbolically leave behind bad memories and welcome the summer season.
