Elche is preparing to turn back the clock for more than two weeks as its Medieval Festival returns with street performances, music, theatre, the Misteri d’Elx and a huge medieval market.

The 31st Festival Medieval d’Elx runs from 23 October to 8 November under the theme Terra Regnum, with events taking place across the historic centre.

One of the biggest attractions will be the Mercado Medieval, which attracted more than 200,000 visits last year and returns from 5 to 8 November.

The festival starts in the streets

The programme begins on Friday 23 October when Spinish Circo performs Flamen al carrer.

FAM Teatre follows with Quimera on 24 October, while the Banda Sinfónica de Elche performs on 25 October.

Street entertainment plays a major role throughout the festival, with the city’s squares and historic streets becoming part of the event rather than simply providing the route between venues.

There will also be performances at the Gran Teatro, Las Clarisas, Hort del Xocolater and Sala de la Tramoia.

The Misteri d’Elx takes centre stage

The Misteri d’Elx remains at the heart of the festival.

The centuries-old sacred musical drama is one of Elche’s most important traditions and has UNESCO recognition as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Its autumn performances provide an opportunity to see the Misteri outside its better-known August dates.

General rehearsals take place on 30 October at 21:30 and 31 October at 20:30.

The official performance follows on Sunday 1 November.

La Vespra begins at 10:00, followed by La Festa at 17:00.

Medieval market returns in November

For many visitors, the Mercado Medieval will be the main excuse for a trip into Elche.

It opens at 18:00 on Thursday 5 November and continues until Sunday 8 November.

Stalls and activities will spread around Plaza de Baix, neighbouring streets and the Glorieta, transforming a large section of the city centre.

The scale of the event has grown considerably. Organisers say last year’s medieval market recorded more than 200,000 visits.

Expect the usual combination of crafts, food, traders and medieval-themed entertainment, with plenty happening beyond the stalls themselves.

Blanca Paloma joins the programme

Music also features heavily during the festival.

Ana Alcaide brings Esentia to the Gran Teatro on 25 October, while Eureka Música y Ciencia, organised by Miguel Hernández University, takes place there on 28 October.

Elche-born singer Blanca Paloma performs on 30 October.

She represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 with Eaea, but this appearance brings her back to her home city as part of the festival programme.

Free events at Las Clarisas

Not everything requires a ticket.

Las Clarisas will host several free performances, including Bubulú, historia de tu ciudad, Susurros de Al-Ándalus and Viaje por la historia de la música.

Hort del Xocolater will stage events including Aurora Musicae: del medievo al renacimiento and Una historia de película.

Families can also look out for Rucs. El maleficio del brujo at Sala de la Tramoia.

A poster with a local story

This year’s festival poster comes from illustrator, graphic designer and photographer Vicente Javier Poveda.

Its design draws on medieval manuscripts, tapestries, parchments and altarpieces, with a crowned woman carrying a sword at the centre.

Poveda created the figure as a tribute to the women who have helped shape Elche’s history.

He has also dedicated it particularly to the city’s aparadoras, the women traditionally associated with stitching and finishing footwear. The tribute has a personal connection because his mother was one of them.

More to see beyond the festival dates

The programme also includes exhibitions and cultural events.

The Festa d’Elig magazine will be presented at Elche Town Hall on 27 October.

Meanwhile, the Joan Castejón – Cercant bellesa exhibition continues at the Sala Kursaal of the Gran Teatro until 29 November.

With the Misteri, concerts, street theatre and four days of medieval market trading packed into the programme, there is considerably more here than an opportunity to buy something from a man dressed as a monk.
