History will come alive in Pilar de la Horadada next month as the town stages a free re-enactment of one of the most important events in its past.
On Saturday, August 8, actors will recreate the Sentencia Arbitral de Torrellas, the landmark agreement signed on the same date in 1304 that settled a long-running territorial dispute between the kingdoms of Aragón and Castile.
The event also marks the inauguration of a replica of the historic Mojón Real, the boundary marker that symbolises the agreement.
Taking place in El Mojón, the evening promises to bring a pivotal chapter of local history to life while celebrating the heritage that helped shape the Campo de la Horadada.
The agreement that changed the region
The Sentencia Arbitral de Torrellas saw King Jaime II of Aragón and King
Fernando IV of Castile agree new borders following a dispute over the former Kingdom of Murcia.
The following year, the Treaty of Elche confirmed the settlement, bringing the land that now forms Pilar de la Horadada into the Kingdom of Valencia under the Crown of Aragón.
Those decisions had a lasting impact on the area. For centuries, the Campo de la Horadada became an important frontier between two kingdoms, where merchants, farmers, pilgrims and travellers crossed paths, helping to shape the area’s identity and culture.
More than a history lesson
Rather than simply unveiling the replica Mojón Real, the event aims to immerse visitors in medieval life through live performances that recreate the historic agreement.
The re-enactment has been organised to help people discover the origins of Pilar de la Horadada while highlighting the municipality’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
By commemorating the 722nd anniversary of the agreement, the town hopes to encourage a greater appreciation of the events that helped define the region.
