If you are looking for a truly authentic Costa Blanca experience, Santa Pola’s Romería del Cap ranks among the most distinctive events on the local calendar.
On the weekend of 13 and 14 June, hundreds of residents will once again accompany the Virgen del Rosario on a scenic coastal pilgrimage from the town centre to the Cabo de Santa Pola.
The annual event brings together tradition, faith and some of the most spectacular sea views on the Costa Blanca.
A 7.5km walk along the Mediterranean
One of the highlights of the celebration takes place at dawn on Sunday 14
June.
At 07:00, the Virgen del Rosario will leave the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and begin the 7.5-kilometre journey to the chapel at Cabo de Santa Pola.
The route follows the coastline and offers uninterrupted Mediterranean views for much of the walk.
Volunteers carry the statue on their shoulders while members of Colla El Freu accompany the procession with traditional music.
Along the route, organisers will stop near Santa Pola del Este and at CIMAR, where volunteers will distribute water and fresh fruit to participants.
An evening of music by the sea
The celebrations begin the previous evening.
At 20:00 on Saturday 13 June, participants will present a floral offering at the chapel.
Local choirs and music groups will then perform a traditional serenade.
After the performances, attendees can enjoy a traditional sopar del cabasset, a relaxed picnic-style dinner beside the beach.
An early start on Sunday
Activities begin at 06:30 on Sunday with a gathering at the parish church.
Participants will collect their traditional walking canes before members of Coro Los Romeros perform a selection of traditional jotas.
The pilgrimage sets off at 07:00 as church bells ring across the town.
When participants reach the chapel at Cabo de Santa Pola, clergy will celebrate a special mass at 10:00.
After the service, Santa Pola Town Hall will serve breakfast to participants.
Bus available for visitors
Visitors who would prefer not to complete the full walk can use a bus service departing from Avenida Fernando Pérez Ojeda at 09:00.
The service will return passengers to Santa Pola after the celebrations conclude.
