Lace up your walking shoes. Alicante is expanding its nature activities this spring. Enjoy Senderos de Primavera (Spring Walks). A programme of guided walks open to the public free of charge.

The six guided routes run between March and June. The programme aims to help residents and visitors discover natural areas, historic landscapes and the lesser-known corners of the city.

New rural route in Vallonga

This year introduces a new feature. For the first time, one walk will explore Alicante’s rural districts. This offers participants a chance to experience traditional agricultural landscapes on the city outskirts.

The route takes place in Vallonga, passing through Lo Cheperut and Cueva Santana, areas west of Alicante known for farmland and natural scenery.

Councillor Villar said the goal is to broaden the focus beyond coastal and urban routes to include countryside that forms part of Alicante’s natural heritage.

Torres de la Huerta walk

On 29 March you can enjoy a walk through the historic Torres de la Huerta, defensive towers built in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect agricultural lands from pirate attacks.

Starting at Torre Sarrió, the circular walk covers about eight kilometres and passes eleven historic towers while exploring the surrounding landscape.

Coastal walk around Cabo de la Huerta

The second walk, on 12 April, follows the coastline around Cabo de la Huerta, starting at Cala Cantalares and continuing to the nearby lighthouse.

Participants will learn about the area’s botanical diversity, including the always alive plant of Alicante, an endemic species found in the local micro-reserve of flora. Walkers will also see unusual geological features, such as a marine terrace considered a fossil beach dating back around 100,000 years.

Alicante spring walks:  Vallonga route

The Vallonga walk will take place on 26 April. Starting in Lo Cheperut, the circular route spans around four kilometres, crossing traditional farmland where historic farmhouses stand alongside modern crops.

The walk passes the Taibilla canal, a vital water infrastructure in south-eastern Spain. The route borders the districts of Bacarot, Fontcalent, Rebolledo and Santa Ana, near Elche.

Evening forest walks

Later in the programme, two evening walks explore Alicante’s forest parks:

  • 9 May: Walkers explore El Tossal, linking wooded areas with Castillo de San Fernando and a geological interpretation zone.
  • 23 May: Participants hike Serra Grossa, also called Sierra de San Julián, a hill offering panoramic views of the Bay of Alicante and containing Spanish Civil War remains.

Final walk at Monte Orgegia

The programme ends on 6 June at Monte Orgegia, Alicante’s first urban forest park. The area reflects the historic landscape of the old Huerta de Alicante.

Registration details

All walks are free, but advance registration is required. Each route is limited to 50 participants. Places must be booked via the Ayuntamiento de Alicante official website.

Registration for the first walk opens on Monday 16 March at 10:00.
