If you rely on the TRAM to get around the Costa Blanca, it is worth keeping an eye on your travel plans this March. Tram drivers have announced a series of strike days that could affect services across the network.

The SEMAF union has called the action after negotiations with Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana, the public company that runs the tram and regional train services, reached a deadlock.

According to the union, it has taken this step “in defence of safety and organisational fairness” after exhausting all negotiation channels.

When will the TRAM strikes take place?

The strike action is planned for six days in March:

  • 13 March
  • 16 March
  • 18 March
  • 20 March
  • 24 March
  • 26 March

On those days, work stoppages are scheduled during three time periods:

  • 07:00 to 10:00
  • 13:00 to 16:00
  • 19:00 to 21:00

Travellers may therefore experience reduced services or delays during these hours.

What this means for passengers

For residents, commuters and visitors using the tram along the Costa Blanca, the best advice is simply to check service updates before travelling on the strike dates.

Although the operator usually maintains minimum services during strike action, some lines may run less frequently than normal during the scheduled stoppages.

If negotiations resume, the situation could still change. For now, passengers using the Alicante tram network should allow a little extra time for their journeys on the affected days.

TRAM strikes: Pressure on drivers

According to the union, infrastructure issues are also making the job more stressful for drivers. Temporary speed limits, equipment problems and ageing infrastructure are among the issues mentioned.

SEMAF says these problems can lead to delays, cancellations and frequent technical faults, while drivers are still expected to keep to tight schedules.

The union believes this situation increases stress levels for staff who ultimately carry responsibility for the safe operation of the tram.
