For the first time in Mundomar history, two Harris’s hawk chicks have hatched at the Benidorm nature park.

The milestone coincides with the park’s 30th anniversary.

The chicks, named Sáhara and Dakar, are the first successful breeding pair of the species at Mundomar and represent an important achievement for the park’s conservation and animal welfare programmes.

A first for the Benidorm park

The proud parents, Jalisco and Arizona, arrived at Mundomar in 2021 when they were just a month old. After several years in the care of the park’s veterinarians and keepers, the pair has successfully raised its first brood.

According to Mundomar, successful breeding under human care only happens when animals enjoy the right environmental conditions, expert veterinary care and high welfare standards, making the arrival of the chicks a significant moment for the park.

Growing up fast

Now eight weeks old, Sáhara and Dakar are thriving.

The young hawks have developed their full plumage and have already left the nest to begin exploring their surroundings under the watchful eyes of their parents.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Harris’s hawks is the way they raise their young. Unlike many birds of prey, both adults share responsibility for feeding and protecting their chicks, working together throughout the breeding process.

Visitors to Mundomar can now watch the family as the youngsters continue to grow and gain confidence.

A special anniversary celebration

The arrival of the chicks is a fitting way for Mundomar to celebrate three decades of caring for wildlife.

The park says the birth reflects its long-term commitment to conservation, education and animal welfare, values that have been at the heart of Mundomar since it opened its doors 30 years ago.

For visitors, it’s also a rare opportunity to see two young Harris’s hawks taking their first steps into the world.
