If you see 30,000 superheroes, pirates, nurses, cowboys and people wearing costumes that defy easy explanation wandering around Benidorm, do not panic. It is probably Thursday 12 November, the day of the Benidorm Fancy Dress Party.
Yes, Benidorm’s enormous Fancy Dress Party returns to the Rincón de Loix, bringing a full day of costumes, music, packed bars and a colourful parade to one of the resort’s busiest areas.
How did Benidorm Fancy Dress Party start?
The event started 32 years ago as a much smaller celebration at Sinatra’s pub. It has since grown into a major date on Benidorm’s calendar, attracting around 30,000 people.
British visitors remain at the heart of the party, although increasing numbers of Spanish, Belgian, Dutch and other international visitors now join them.
When does the Benidorm Fancy Dress Party take place?
This year’s Fancy Dress Party takes place on Thursday 12 November, immediately after Benidorm’s Festes Majors Patronals.
Most of the action will centre on the Rincón de Loix, particularly around Calle
Gerona, Calle Lepanto and Calle Mallorca.
More than 50 local venues are expected to get involved in some form during the day.
There is no single starting time for the party itself. People gradually arrive throughout the day, although road closures will begin during the morning and the main parade takes place later in the afternoon.
Benidorm Fancy Dress Party Big Parade
The Cabalgata multicolor will provide the centrepiece of the celebrations shortly after 16:00.
At the time organisers announced the event, 18 floats, dance groups and entertainment groups had already signed up, exceeding the number registered at the same stage last year.
With thousands of people lining the streets in costume, the parade has become one of the most recognisable parts of Fancy Dress day.
And given Benidorm’s approach to dressing up, subtlety is unlikely to trouble the judges.
Roads will close from around 11:00
Anyone driving through the Rincón de Loix should take note of the traffic restrictions.
Local Police plan to close Calle Gerona and Calle Lepanto to vehicles at around 11:00.
The closures will allow the streets to cope safely with the large number of pedestrians expected throughout the day.
Benidorm City Council has been planning security arrangements for several months alongside local nightlife businesses, National Police, Civil Protection and other services.
Extra Local and National Police officers, Civil Protection personnel and medical services will also be on duty.
From one pub to 30,000 partygoers
Fancy Dress has rather humble beginnings compared with the scale of today’s event.
Manolo Nieto started the celebration at Sinatra’s pub 32 years ago, initially attracting a largely British crowd.
Year by year, more bars became involved and more visitors joined the party until it spread through the surrounding streets.
Benidorm councillor Jesús Carrobles says it may now be the largest fancy dress party in Europe, a claim the town will use to promote the 2026 event.
The council expects around 30,000 people this year.
It is not only the Brits dressing up
The British connection remains impossible to miss, but organisers say the crowd has become increasingly international.
Visitors from Belgium and the Netherlands now join Spanish tourists, Benidorm residents and people travelling from elsewhere on the Costa Blanca.
Some visitors make a special trip to Benidorm specifically for Fancy Dress Thursday.
Others turn it into a longer break, arriving earlier in the week or staying through the following weekend.
That makes the event particularly useful for Benidorm’s tourism businesses because it brings a major influx of visitors well outside the traditional summer season.
A huge party with a big security operation
Managing tens of thousands of costumed partygoers in open streets presents rather different challenges from running an event inside a controlled venue.
The council says the party nevertheless has a strong record for good behaviour and few serious incidents.
Organisers credit cooperation between businesses, emergency services and the public for keeping the event manageable despite its size.
The expanding number of participating venues and parade groups suggests Fancy Dress has not finished growing either.
From an informal party in a British pub to tens of thousands of people taking over part of Benidorm, it has been quite a costume change.
