Residents of Guardamar del Segura will soon once again have a public transport connection to Torrevieja Hospital after the service was suspended for almost two years.
The municipal route stopped operating on 1 April 2024 after repeated objections from the council’s financial oversight department.
Service halted after legal concerns
The Ayuntamiento de Guardamar del Segura attempted to regularise the service through a public tender process.
However, this required approval from the Generalitat Valenciana through its Directorate General for Transport.
That approval never arrived. Instead, the regional authority issued an unfavourable report. It concluded that the service duplicated existing transport responsibilities, meaning the municipality could not legally operate it.
Talks held with regional authorities
At the time, mayor José Luis Sáez said the council was exploring alternative contractual options to restore the route as quickly as possible.
He also explained that the Generalitat had indicated that responsibility for this type of transport lies with the regional administration rather than local councils.
The town hall also opened discussions with Agustina Esteve to find a solution that would allow the service to return.
New contract signed for the route
There is now positive news for residents.
The mayor has confirmed that the Conselleria de Transportes has signed the contract for the service.
The transport company Avanza will run the new route, which is expected to begin operating in the coming weeks.
Daily journeys: Guardamar to Torrevieja Hospital bus
According to the information released, the service will include:
- Six daily journeys from Monday to Friday
- Four journeys on Saturdays and Sundays
All departures will leave from the Guardamar Bus Station and connect passengers with the hospital in Torrevieja.
Important link for medical appointments
Restoring the route will be particularly important for residents who rely on public transport to attend medical appointments, treatments or hospital visits.
For many local residents, especially older people, the service provides a vital link between Guardamar and the main hospital serving the area.
