Renfe has extended its pet-friendly policy to allow dogs weighing up to 40 kilos on almost all of its commercial and public service trains.
The move gives owners far more options when travelling with their four-legged companions.
Travelling around Spain with a large dog has just become much easier.
Until now, larger dogs could only travel on a limited number of routes as part of a pilot scheme.
More trains now welcome larger dogs
The new policy covers AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, Avant and Media Distancia services.
However, each train can carry a maximum of two large dogs, and they must travel in designated pet-friendly carriages.
Owners must also reserve the correct seat when booking. On most commercial services, Renfe charges a €40 supplement, while different fares apply on Media Distancia routes.
Rules owners must follow
Before travelling, owners should make sure they meet all of Renfe’s requirements.
Dogs must:
- Weigh no more than 40kg
- Stay on a non-extendable lead no longer than 1.5 metres
- Wear a muzzle in stations and while boarding or leaving the train
- Travel with an up-to-date vaccination record or European pet passport
Owners must also carry cleaning supplies in case they are needed during the journey.
In addition, Renfe will provide passengers travelling with large dogs with a travel kit containing a seat cover and floor mat to help keep the carriage clean.
Some dogs cannot travel
Despite the expanded policy, some restrictions remain in place.
Renfe does not allow puppies under one year old belonging to potentially dangerous breeds to travel under the scheme.
Female dogs in heat are also not permitted.
Easier rail travel for pet owners
The new policy makes train travel a much more practical option for thousands of dog owners across Spain.
Previously, many people with larger dogs had little choice but to travel by car. Now, they can plan weekend breaks and longer rail journeys with far fewer restrictions.
