The castle of Guardamar del Segura is open again after six months of improvements.
Sitting on the top of El Castell hill, the castle offers sweeping views of the Vega Baja.
The improvements cost just over €180,000.
Newly installed QR-coded signs let visitors explore the site’s long history, including its founding by Alfonso X the Wise in 1271.
The castle of Guardamar del Segura is more than a scenic ruin. It is one of the town’s greatest landmarks and a declared Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Archaeological finds show continuous settlement from the 8th century BC to the 19th century, with Phoenician, Iberian, Roman, Islamic, and Christian remains. Highlights include Iberian incense burners, a Roman bronze of Mercury, medieval ceramics, and Islamic burials cut by later Christian fortifications.
The medieval town grew around the castle at the end of the 13th century when Alfonso X and Catalan settlers designed its streets, homes, and squares. Earthquakes in 1829 destroyed much of it, and stone was reused to build “new” Guardamar. Still, parts of the Gunpowder Bastion and medieval walls survive.
Today, climbing the hill is a must. From the castle, you can see the Mediterranean, the Segura River, and the countryside once defended from this very spot.
