Every September, the people of Alcoy honour their patron saint, Alcoy’s Virgin of the Lilies and make their way to the sanctuary of Font Roja.
The tradition draws together thousands of locals and visitors.
The story dates back to 21 August 1653, when villagers discovered the image of the Virgin imprinted on the bulbs of wild lilies. That miraculous event sparked a devotion that has lasted for centuries. The pilgrimage remains the highlight of the annual celebrations.
The big day usually falls on the third Sunday of September, when the pilgrim statue of the Virgin sets out from the church of San Mauro. She is carried along the traditional route to the Font Roja sanctuary. Alcoyans join in, walking, cycling, or even arriving on horseback to accompany her.
As the procession passes the cemetery, prayers are offered for loved ones who have passed away.
Virgin of the Lilies: Faith and community spirit
The journey is as much about community spirit as it is about faith. Along the way, refreshment stops serve up local tipples. Enjoy timonet, herrero, and cantueso, accompanied by sweet Alcoyan pastries.
These traditional herbal liqueurs are typical of the Alicante region (particularly in the Marina Alta and Vega Baja areas of Spain):
- Timonet: A sweet herbal liqueur made with thyme (tomillo in Spanish). Its name comes from the local diminutive of tomillo.
- Herrero: A traditional herbal digestif, usually stronger and less sweet, sometimes homemade, prepared with a mix of local herbs. The name “Herrero” is often linked to small-scale producers or family recipes.
- Cantueso: A liqueur made from wild lavender (cantueso) flowers, typical of Alicante, with a smooth, aromatic flavour. It enjoys a protected geographical indication: Cantueso Alicantino.
Once the Virgin reaches Font Roja, a Mass is held, as people pay tribute to Alcoy’s Virgin of the Lilies.
After the service, the atmosphere turns festive, with traditional games, dances, contests, and a folklore festival.
The pilgrimage crowns several weeks of events leading up to the big day. Festivities begin in late August with a Eucharist and a procession near the sanctuary, followed by the unveiling of the official poster in early September.
From 17 to 19 September 2025, a solemn Triduum will be held in honour of the Virgin, and on 20 September, a floral offering will take place in Plaza de España.
This year’s pilgrimage on 21 September carries particular significance. It marks the 372nd anniversary of the miraculous discovery of the lilies.
