The Costa Blanca has its sights set firmly across the Atlantic, and momentum is building as it pushes for direct US air links.
The news follows the success of the Montreal to Valencia route, which will become a year-round service. Regional tourism leaders are now working to secure a direct air link with the United States. The proposal would allow flights to land at either Alicante-Elche or Valencia airports.
Tourism Minister Marián Cano confirmed that talks are well advanced. Officials are meeting with representatives from Asia and North America, but Cano stressed that the US market remains the top priority.
The goal is clear. The region wants to attract long-haul visitors directly to the Costa Blanca and the wider Valencian Community.
Costa Blanca: Direct US air link contenders
Rather than pinning hopes on a single city, the regional government is keeping its options open. New York is one of the strongest contenders, but it is far from the only one. Cities such as Miami, Dallas and even Orlando are also on the table. Cano explained, many US regions are experiencing strong growth, and any direct connection would be a welcome boost for local tourism.
To support this strategy, the Valencian Government has announced a €10 million investment. The funds will be dedicated to promoting the region internationally and attracting new air routes to Alicante-Elche Airport and beyond. Air connectivity has become a cornerstone of the region’s tourism plans, particularly after record passenger numbers were reached at both Alicante and Valencia airports.
Costa Blanca tourism: Quality over quantity
For Cano, the strategy is very much about quality rather than quantity. Long-haul visitors from the US and Asia tend to stay longer and are especially drawn to the region’s heritage, culture and gastronomy. Japan and China are also firmly on the radar. Discussions are under way aimed at attracting travellers who already have a strong affinity with Europe.
With proven success in Canada and growing international interest, the Valencian Community is positioning itself as a truly global destination. If these talks come to fruition, direct flights from the United States could soon make Alicante and Valencia even more accessible to travellers from across the Atlantic. This will bring new opportunities for tourism, culture and the local economy.
