The historic centre of Calpe will once again glow with candlelight on Saturday, 7 March, as the town celebrates the second La Nit Encesa, or Candlelit Night.

Organisers will symbolically switch off public street lighting throughout the old town. In its place, thousands of candles will take centre stage, creating a warm and intimate setting. Residents and visitors will have the chance to experience Calpe’s heritage from a fresh perspective.

Landmarks including the Torreó de la Peça, the town walls, the bell tower, public sculptures and the Ajuntament Vell will shine in candlelight.

Calpe’s Candlelit Night: Art on the Streets

One of this year’s main additions is “The Street of Art”. This open-air creative space will allow local painters, sculptors and craftspeople to work live in front of the public. For one evening, the old quarter will become a candlelit outdoor gallery where visitors can watch artworks take shape in real time.

Theatre, Storytelling and Live Music

The programme offers activities for all ages. At 6 pm, a roaming theatre performance will depart from Plaça Mosquit and wind through the old town. Children can follow the procession, which will finish at the Town Hall.

Live music will begin at 20:30 in Plaza de la Villa.

A Community Celebration

Councillor Guillermo Sendra highlighted the participatory spirit of the initiative and encouraged residents and businesses to take part.

“This is an opportunity to showcase our historic centre in an intimate and special setting,” he said. “We invite residents, shopkeepers and hospitality venues to place candles on balconies, windows and terraces. We also encourage local artists to share their talent on this magical night, which supports relaxed strolling and our local gastronomy.”
