Teulada-Moraira will celebrate one of its most distinctive local traditions on Saturday 29 August when the Festa del Moscatell returns with a full day dedicated to the municipality’s winemaking heritage.
The celebration combines traditional grape-growing practices with food, wine, music, dancing and family activities.
The programme begins at 09:00 and continues into the night, with events taking place at the Riu Rau del Bancal Roig and later around Avenida de Las Palmas.
One of the highlights will be the traditional escaldà, the centuries-old process once used locally to prepare Moscatell grapes for making raisins.
A morning among the Moscatell vines
The day begins at 09:00 with Experiències amb el Moscatell, or Moscatell
Experiences.
Participants will meet at the beginning of the Font de l’Horta riverside path before travelling by horse-drawn cart to the Riu Rau del Bancal Roig, which houses the municipality’s Ecomuseum Centre.
There, organisers will prepare grapes that will later feature in the Cavalcada del Moscatell, or Moscatell Parade.
A communal breakfast follows at 10:00 and is open to everyone.
At 11:00, visitors can watch a demonstration of the traditional escaldà at the Riu Rau.
The technique involves briefly dipping bunches of grapes into boiling water before laying them out to dry. It forms an important part of the area’s agricultural heritage and its historic raisin industry.
Moscatell parade through Teulada
The celebrations resume at 19:00 with the Cavalcada del Moscatell.
Horse-drawn carts will make their way from Avenida Santa Catalina to the Glorieta at the Sant Vicent Ferrer chapel.
The parade celebrates the agricultural traditions surrounding the Moscatell grape and the role it has played in Teulada’s history.
Local wine, food and live music
Avenida de Las Palmas becomes the centre of the festivities from 19:00.
Local wineries will display their products, while traditional local dances will be the entertainment.
The programme also includes a cantada d’Albades, a traditional Valencian style of singing, alongside the Xafà del Vi (grape-treading), and a Moscatell grape competition.
Children will have their own workshops and attractions throughout the evening.
Moscatell-themed tapas and vermouth, accompanied by live music will also be served.
At 20:00, a tasting featuring wines from local producers will take place then a communal dinner follows, again accompanied by live music.
The celebrations finish with a verbena,(open-air dance party), from 23:00 on Avenida de Las Palmas.
