Calling all runners and fitness fans on the Costa Blanca. It is time to lace up those trainers. Orihuela has confirmed the 23rd Carmen and Joaquín Memorial Duathlon, which will take place this Saturday, 14 March, in the Orihuela district of La Murada.
The event has become a well-established fixture on the regional sporting calendar and attracts athletes from across the area each year.
A major event for duathlon fans
The race forms part of the official competition calendar for both the Valencian region and the Region of Murcia. Because of its strong participation and competitive level, it is considered one of the most important duathlon events in the area.
This year’s race will also have an international feel. Members of the Hungarian national triathlon team are expected to compete, led by Csongor Lehmann, a world-class triathlete who finished eighth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
According to Orihuela’s sports councillor José Caselles, events like this offer a unique opportunity for local athletes.
“It’s not often that you can compete alongside athletes of this level. In La Murada we will have that chance once again,” he said.
The University of Alicante Triathlon Team, one of the top teams in Spain, will also take part in the competition.
Around 200 athletes expected
Organisers expect around 200 athletes to take part, representing more than 40 clubs.
Competitors will be divided into several categories for both men and women:
- Youth
- Junior
- Under-23
- Open category
- Veterans I
- Veterans II
- Veterans III
- Veterans IV
There will also be a team category, along with cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers overall.
Race format
The duathlon will follow the classic three-stage format:
- 5 km run
- 20 km cycling section
- 2.5 km final run
How to register
Registration is open online until Wednesday, 11 March at 23:30, giving runners and cyclists a few more days to secure their place on the start line.
